Mexico is very ethnically and linguistically diverse. Today, there are more than 50 indigenous languages still spoken in Mexico. Sixteen languages are spoken in Oaxaca alone. These languages include Nahuatl, Maya, Zapotec, Mixtec, Tzotizil, and Tzeltal. At the time of the Spanish conquest three major cultures dominated what we now call Mexico. They were the Zapotec of Oaxaca, the Tarascans of Michoacan, and the Aztecs (Nahua) of the Valley of Mexico.
