Mayan Art, History, and Culture

When the Spanish arrived in the early 1500's there were very few Mayan cities still thriving. Most had been wiped out by the introduction of European diseases. Smallpox was probably introduced as early as Columbus's second voyage. Initially, some Mayan villages offered fierce resistance. However, chicken pox, smallpox, and the flu soon followed.
